I have been consistently delighted to see the feats of young Indians in sports. They are making a tremendous impact in India, demonstrating what talent can do for you. A few names come readily to mind: Ishant Sharma, who at 19 emerged as the lead fast bowler on his first tour to Australia; 24 year old Abhinav Bindra, winner of India’s first Olympics Gold medal; and more recently Saina Nehwal, who was ranked World No. 10 in Women’s badminton.
Add to this, India’s new tennis star- Somdev Devvarman, currently making waves in the Chennai Open. Ranked 202 in the ATP rankings, the 23 year old caused a major upset by beating two time champion and former World No. 1, Carlos Moya in the second round in a three setter. With this giant-killing feat behind him, the youngster moves confidently ahead, winning his next match against Ivo Karlovic to enter the semi-final. He is the first Indian to reach this stage since Leander Paes did in 1998.
Well done, young man. India will root for you as you play the semi-finals. You are the future star of Indian tennis.
