Yesterday was a big festival for most of us in India- Ganesh Chaturthi. It’s a festival of piety and gaiety. A festival where everyone prays to the Remover of Obstacles to help us in our work and in our lives. Many years ago, during the British Rule in India, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak was the first to use the worship of Lord Ganesha– perhaps everyone’s favourite in the very large pantheon of Hindu Gods- to further a common cause. As against people worshipping Ganesha in the privacy of their homes, he organised community worship- where people gathered in their thousands to pay homage at designated places. This fostered a sense of purpose and community sharing at a time when Indians seeking independence were groping for symbols of unity and togetherness.
