XLRI 54th Annual Convo.

My alma mater, good old XLRI at Jamshedpur celebrates its 54th Annual Convocation on March 27, 2010. They seem to be in for an interesting day. The Chief Guest will be Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, one of India’s finest corporate houses. The Convocation is also the occasion when XLRI’s prestigious Sir Jahangir Ghandy Medal for Industrial & Social Justice is announced. This year it goes to Dr. E. Sreedharan, famous all over India as the Man behind the Metro.

The secret to having happy employees is to fire the unhappy ones says Jay Goltz who is a typical entrepreneur who runs five successful small businesses in Chicago, employing more than 100 people.  If you think his advice is controversial, read the follow-up post that he has in The New York Times. He has clarified what he means by unhappy employees. He maintains that this works well particularly for small enterprises which have their own rules and constraints.

Delighted to find an old friend and fellow alumnus of XLRI, Jamshedpur is in John Sumser’s list of Top 100 Influencers– he is none other than Gautam Ghosh, known far and wide simply as GG.

Gautam is a role model for many in the new age where the best HR practices have to be strongly linked to anchors young people seem to seek on the net- where perhaps they spend more time than anywhere else! I have found Gautam to be a practical, level headed kind of guy despite all the praise he has received over the years for his professional contributions and constant search for innovation. He was one of the first to understand the value of a personal brand on the internet, doing this years before it became commonly spoken off.
