We have known it for years. Non-verbal communication is a powerful tool to share our emotions. World wide a frown signifies anger and a smile happiness. The master psychologist Eric Berne years ago called a stroke as the smallest unit of recognition and told us about the power of positive strokes. Also how negative strokes, on the contrary, can go so far as to mar the growth of a growing infant. Young children thrive on positive strokes and it is up to us to give them in plenty for good work done.

Ursula M. Burns

When Ursula M. Burns became the CEO of Xerox she crossed two milestones says this article in the New York Times.  Firstly, since she succeeded Anne M. Mulcahy as the CEO, it was a rare case of a woman taking over the highest position in an organization of this size from another woman. Xerox has over 130,00 employees world-wide and has a history of over a hundred years. Founded way back in 1906, Xerox has revenues of over $ 22 billion.

Corporate Social Responsibility

I learnt two new things today:)

1. Using Zemanta, you can reBlog just as you re-Tweet.

2. Apart from the lip service that goes by the name of CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility that many organizations profess to do, GlaxoSmithKline  seems to be doing much more.

I found this fascinating quote today:

In tough economic times, corporate social responsibility often takes a back seat to corporate survival. But, as The New York Times reported last week, that is definitely not the case at the global pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline.bulletproofblog.com, BulletProofBlog the blog on crisis communications, Feb 2010

Christian Fabre

One comes across interesting people from time to time. This story from the Economic Times reads like the pages of a novel. A Frenchmen called Christian Fabre comes to Chennai in India way back in 1971. He lives well along with the other expatriates until Government regulations of that time bring his business to a halt. In a few years time he finds himself with a broken marriage and penniless. Today he is Swami Pranavananda Brahmendra Avadutha Continue reading →

George Cloutier

“Profits Aren’t Everything, They Are The Only Thing” is the title of the recent business book by George A Cloutier. He is the Founder & CEO of American Management Services, a firm specializing in management turnarounds.  Reading about his thoughts on managing in tough times particularly for the small and medium enterprises, in an article in the New York Times, made me pause to reflect.

gender parity

In most cases when both the husband and wife are pursuing their respective corporate careers, a time comes when they need to decide who will sacrifice their career. In India, it is most common for social and other pressures to fall upon the woman to make the sacrifice. It is commonly believed that she has a bigger role in managing the house and looking after the children. Of late, I know of several cases where men have chosen to give up their careers to act primarily as care givers.

Boston Consulting Group

The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has been named one of the top companies to work for in Fortune’s annual rankings. What makes this special is that BCG is one out of only three companies that have featured in this prestigious list for the last five years in a row.

BCG, as is well known is a $ 2.4 billion strategy consulting firm with offices in 68 cities world wide.  This is one firm that seems to live up to its values.
