Interesting article in the Times of India recently: “Look Good, Work Less?” by Chandana Arora. Do good lookers get to work less in offices? Do those who aren’t so blessed get to work far more? I guess there are mixed reactions to these questions.

In my experience, some swear that those who are good looking are virtually on velvet. I am sure of one thing though. They may not work less but they most certainly get to do the more glamorous work.

If you are choosing a few people to represent your organisation, in a trade show or a national convention, other things being equal, you do tend to choose those who are smarter, which often translates to being better looking. I repeat however that the key phrase is , other things being equal.

On the contrary, those who are not so good looking tend to be pushed into the background- initially by their lack of confidence, often by more pushy peers and sometimes by their bosses. This results in their being stuck with the less glamorous work- often that which is not majorly visible. If you have a vacancy for a Front Office Asst, wouldn’t you give top marks to looks? Some body less good looking may well be more competent, but the chances are more that the good looker gets the job. The same logic does not seem to hold good if the job is in the burrows of the organisation- deep inside where one is not so visible.

Rather than good looks, I believe there is a premium for those who are smarter. This includes the way they dress, the way they conduct themselves and present themselves as a total package. Not everyone is blessed with good looks but everyone can make the effort to smarten up. To look confident and competent. To act in a manner that others feel the person is on top of his/her job.
