This post is prompted by my wife’s birthday. How do you react to each passing year? Do you look ahead more than you look back? What does each passing year mean to you? “How are you celebrating your birthday?” is a common refrain from younger people. During childhood and early adulthood , celebrations are public displays of bonhomie and friendship. Parties are organised and birthdays celebrated with great enthusiasm. For children these days, having a big bash for a birthday party is a must. I have often wondered how much the parents must be budgeting for each birthday.
These parties are not largely family and friends affairs they once used to be. The done thing is to hand over the entire program to a professional event management company who will do everything for you, including designing a party on a theme of your choice. All you have to do is to keep your cheque book ready -to pay their bill.
To start with, as one grows older there are physical changes. “Middle age” said Bob Hope the US comedian ” is when your age starts to show around your middle”. The celebration moves from the dash and vigour of the physical to the contemplative mood of reflection. When you are older, birthdays become more significant. They are occasions to reflect on all that has happened in the past. You can’t help think of the years that went by. The highlights of your life, as it were, as they flash past you. Looking back is fine but we need to look ahead too. With optimism and enthusiasm. As you grow older, health becomes more important than ever before. There is no point in having all the riches if your poor health prevents you from enjoying what those riches can get for you.
I guess anything is possible- it depends on your mind. Recently we read that the world’s oldest blogger – Olive Riley- passed away at the ripe old age of 108. That she had the enthusiasm to begin a pursuit so late in life is truly amazing. Surely, it proves age is no bar- as long as you know what you want and are willing to make every effort to get it.
So, look ahead at life with confidence and once again, a very happy birthday.
