I am glad the Indian selectors have chosen veteran Anil Kumble to be the skipper for the Tests in the series against Pakistan, Austalia and South Africa. This appointment comes 10 years after he was vice-captain to Sachin Tendulkar.
Say what you will, Kumble has always been a team man and a fighter to boot. The statistics of his performance over many years speak for themselves.
The 37 year old Bangalore spinner has the third highest number of Test wickets – 566 from 118 Tests with a best of 10/74 . This came in an innings against Pakistan.
In the last tour of England, he reached a landmark which came after 17 years – his first Test century- which incidentally turned out to be the only Test century by an Indian on this tour.
Kumble brings with him a wealth of experience, a cool temperament and a desire to win. He is the right choice for Dhoni to be understudy to. The experience will help Dhoni become a better skipper himself when his turn comes.
