The University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business recently announced the launching of the Enid Fogel Diversity Scholarship.

The scholarship is instituted in memory of Enid Fogel, the school’s first African-American associate Dean. She was the associate dean of students from 1981 to 1988.

Her husband, the 1993 Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Fogel, credited her work as a researcher in helping him succeed in his career. Robert Fogel is the Charles R. Walgreen Distinguished Service Professor of American Institutions at Chicago GSB.

The Enid Fogel Diversity Scholarship will provide at least $50,000 to be used for tuition for qualified students in the full time MBA program. Current tuition at Chicago GSB is approximately $89,000 for the two-year program.

“This scholarship will help us attract more of the most talented individuals from all backgrounds, across diverse racial and gender lines,” said Edward Snyder, dean of the school.

The Enid Fogel Diversity Scholarship is part of the Initiative for Diversity at the Chicago GSB. The three goals of the Initiative are to:

  1. Attract exceptional MBA candidates from diverse backgrounds
  2. Build resources to ensure support for underrepresented students
  3. Raise the profile of Chicago GSB as a business force bringing together many diverse voices in the pursuit of excellence.

Chicago GSB is a pioneer in diversity programs. In 1964, it created the first scholarship program for African-Americans at a major business school. In the 1980s, Chicago GSB became the first business school with a dedicated staff to support underrepresented minorities. In 2005, Chicago GSB was named the outstanding educational institution of the year by the National Black MBA Association.

I must thank Brian Reese for writing in his blog about Ben Casnocha.

I was amazed to hear that at 19 Ben had started two companies and written a book.

His book is appropriately called My Start-Up Life: What a (Very) Young CEO Learned on his Journey Thorugh Silicon Valley.

The New York Times called his book “precocious, informative, and entertaining.” He founded Comcate, Inc., an e-government software company, at age 14.

BusinessWeek recently named Ben “one of America’s top young entrepreneurs.” He writes prolifically on his blog which the San Jose Business Journal called one of the “Top 25 Blogs in Silicon Valley.” Ben has given speeches at more than a dozen universities including Duke University, The Wharton School, and Boston University.

What struck me was the importance Ben placed on mentors in his life.

He writes: A famous Harvard Business Review article published in 1979 reported that mentored executives earned more money at a younger age, were better educated, were more likely to follow initial career goals, and had higher career satisfaction. This isn’t all that surprising—experienced practitioners transferring wisdom is bound to do something!

Wild, Wild Card Entry

I have enjoyed watching Amul Star Voice of India, a popular music talent contest in India.

Of late, things have become bizarre. Some weeks back, the last 4 were Ishmeet, Harshit, Irfan & Abhilasha. There was an outcry when Toshi, Priyani and Aabhas were eliminated because they got less votes from viewers.

Amazingly, citing the wild card entry method, all 3 who were eliminated were brought back! No definition of wild card entry that I know of includes getting back some one who has already lost in a competition!!

What happens if Ishmeet, Harshit, Irfan or Abhilasha were to get less votes in a future episode? Does that mean the earlier voting was invalid. Will there be another wild card or a wilder card and than the wildest card?

Disclaimer: Incidentally, my favourites are Abhilasha, Aabhas and Priyani but I speak on a matter of principle.
