Do we go Overboard?

Do we Indians go overboard? If it is praise, we lavish such vast amounts that it is often too heady for the recipient. This is so in sport, music talent shows and in all walks of life.
If it is criticism, the recipients are virtually hounded with strong abuse.

In the recent past, the Indian cricket team has tasted both varieties of crowd reaction. After their pathetic performance in the World Cup in the West Indies they slunk back to Indian shores without a whisper. The crowds bayed for their blood.

After the more recent triumph in the Twenty20 championship in South Africa, they were given a grand reception at Mumbai , the kind of which has not been seen in living memory.

Despite all the brave talk we are getting hammered by the visiting Australians. They lead 2-0 in the 7 match series with 4 more games to go.

Yes, we fans go overboard. Sadly, do the cricketers too? Can we not have a higher degree of commitment as we see in the Aussies?

Is off-field activity hampering India?

It is now fashionable for CEOs to blog. Well known examples are Jonathan Schwartz of Sun Microsystems, Kevin Lynch of Adobe and Nandan Nilekani, Co-Chairman of Infosys.

Seth Godin the renowned marketing expert has this tip for CEO bloggers :-

“Be candid, urgent, timely, pithy, controversial, utilitarian. Short and sweet, folks. If you can’t be at least four of the six things listed above, please don’t blog.”

Excellent advice, Seth. What you say applies to all of us who blog.

Success Principles from Jack Canfield

I wanted to gift my son on his 21 st birthday with something which could help him succeed in life.

I chose Jack Canfield’s ” How To Get from Where You Are to Where You Want To Be- The 25 Principles of Success”.

Jack Canfield is best known for his “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series of books. He is the editor and author of over 60 best-selling books with over 100 million copies in print in 46 languages around the world.

He has a record in the Guinness Book of Records for having 7 books in the May 24, 1998 New York Times best seller list !

I need hardly say that I read “Success Principles” myself. It was absorbing and comprehensive. The ideas are interspersed with a wonderful collection of thought-provoking quotations.

I am convinced this collection of principles can help us succeed.

Highly recommended.

Over the years, one person I have admired for his succinct and prolific writing on a variety of people management issues is Dr. John Sullivan.

I have gained, as I am sure have many around the globe, by his clear thinking and ability to expound complex issues in simple terms.

For over 20 years, Dr. Sullivan has been associated with the San Francisco State University
where he is the Professor of Management.

His thought leadership has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Fortune Magazine, Fast Company Magazine, Business 2.0, The Economist, The New York Times, HR Magazine, and Workforce Management Magazine.

His site is recommended for those who wish to sharpen their understanding of the management of people issues.
