Employee Referral Works!

Today’s world is characterized by a huge demand for talent. In many industries in India for instance the demand for top talent far exceeds supply.

Such an environment pushed organisations to develop Employee Referral Programs. It started in the IT industry but as this article in the Economic Times says has taken roots in many other industries as well.

It is estimated that as much as 40-60 % of hiring takes place through Employee Referrals.

While this could be a smart move for organisations they should be careful, in my view, not to allow standards to be diluted by any slack in this program.

I would urge them to see the check list of one person I admire hugely, Dr. John Sullivan as they put such a program in place.

Got into the mood of writing today.

Dashed off a short story in 45 minutes. It is called “He Sees Everything”

It has been posted at Sulekha. It’s posted there because it strictly does not have anything to do with this blog!

Would welcome your comments.

Blogger vs. WordPress

I am no geek. All that I have done in my blog is thanks to features already available there. A certain amount of experimentation- even the frustration of having things go wrong- have helped me get by.

A conversation about the merits and demerits of Blogger made me wonder if I should look beyond this. I am glad I found this post by Pulsed about Blogger vs. WordPress.

I think it is a well structured account of merits and demerits. At the end of the day, I guess we should use what best meets our needs.

For the present, at least, I shall stay with good old Blogger

Save A Life…Make Way For An Ambulance

It’s amazing how people can be indifferent when they hear the piercing siren of an ambulance. I have seen people in Bangalore react in a variety of ways in such a case. There are, thank God, still some who do their best to squeeze to a side in crowded traffic and make way for the ambulance. Others don’t seem to know or care. Yet others wait for the ambulance to break free so that they can tailgate it like the paparazzi chasing an ill fated Diana!

The Golden Hour is crucial for those who have a heart attack ( MI or myocardial infarction as I came to know later it is called). They say that your chances of survival go up if you get medical attention as soon as possible after the attack.

I speak from experience. On April 18, 2005, I got a heart attack at about 8.30 a.m. I obviously did not know this at that time. While having a bath I felt some discomfort in my chest. Years of reading detective novels made me do the smartest thing under the circumstances. Reach out and unbolt the door so that you are not trapped in.

It was then Google to the rescue. I punched in “Heart Attack Symptoms” and there flew pages on them. A quick reading convinced me that I had to rush to the hospital. The impetus came from reading about the Golden Hour.

To cut a long story short, the ambulance rushed me through Bangalore’s crowded roads to Wockhardt, Shortly after I underwent coronary angioplasty and was discharged after a few days.

Here I am alive and kicking. I silently thank the driver of the ambulance and all those who made way for it that day.

Came across an interesting and thought provoking post in coachsusie’s weblog.

She quotes the famous American writer Samuel Langhorn Clemens known more popularly as Mark Twain.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed
By the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines.Sail away from the safe harbor.Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.

Look back to see what you have achieved but look ahead to see what more you can do. There is so much to be done.

Stay Married To Live Longer!

New research in Britain seems to indicate that staying married has many benefits for both adults and children.

Prof. Mike Murphy of the London School of Economics was quoted as saying:” All the evidence shows that there is something in marriage itself that is a benefit”.

The study shows that married couples live longer, enjoy better health and can rely on more home care than their divorced, widowed or single peers.

Widowed men and single mothers had the worst health suffering more acute and chronic conditions while married people of both sexes enjoyed the best health. Single, widowed and divorced older women had higher mortality rates than their married peers.

Many benefits for you…to get married or stay married !
