Hewitt Associates in partnership with The RBL Group and Fortune Magazine announced their list of the Global Top Companies for Leaders.

The list was selected by an esteemed judges’ panel consisting of world-renowned authors, professors, business executives and executive coaches:

1. General Electric Company
2. Procter & Gamble
3. Nokia Corporation
4. Hindustan Unilever Limited
5. Capital One Financial Corporation
6. General Mills, Inc.
7. McKinsey & Company
8. IBM
9. BBVA
10. Infosys Technologies Limited

When comparing the Global Top Companies with more than 530 other companies around the world, Hewitt found one overarching characteristic that set them apart from the rest – Global Top Companies make leadership a critical part of the company’s organizational fabric.

Specifically, the study found that leadership practices at Global Top Companies are an inherent part of the culture, and that developing future leaders is simply a way of operating that must be intertwined with running the business.

How often has your Sunday been ruined because you had to travel to attend a Monday morning meeting out of town?

Apparently, PepsiCo is considerate about such niceties and does not allow out station meetings on Mondays. These and other best practices are mentioned in the Economic Times.

For MNCs, it’s also about matching up to global best practices. Take GlaxoSmithKline. According to MD Zubair Ahmed, “At annual performance reviews, meeting sales targets are given as much importance as how well the individual balances his work and personal life.”

Abraham Maslow, motivation

Chip Conley has an excellent article in Fast Company titled” Change Management:What’s The Divorce Rate in Your Company?

Like Chip, I am a big fan of Abraham Maslow. I believe his work on the Hierarchy of Needs was relevant when he first wrote about it over 50 years ago, is relevant now and will be relevant in the future.

Effective leaders have understood that the secret of getting superior performance is to understand the “key drivers” which motivate each individuals. As we say, we must know “which buttons to press” for each person.

Have you used this yourself to bring out the best in your team?
