Well Done, Team India

A quick post to celebrate India’s winning the ICC Twenty20 championship a little while ago. Amazing final against Pakistan which India won by 5 runs. A thriller till the very end.

Events have proved that youth can deliver. Led by an aggressive captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni who showed an excellent flair for leadership, India proved their critics wrong. What impressed one was the camaraderie in the team, the fact that almost every one contributed in some way and backed each other to the hilt.

A lot of the credit should go to Dhoni who marshalled his resources extremely well, he showed a lot of confidence in his team and they rose to the occasion.

Well done, the young India team. We are proud of you.

Infosys Technologies is one of India’s success stories. A look at their Quick Facts shows their impressive track record.

They have over 75,000 employees world wide. Obviously, talent retention is a big challenge for organisations like Infosys. Their business heads are paid very attractive remuneration as per the Economic Times which speaks of 6 leaders getting pay cheques of $ 1 million.

That’s $ 1 million each…not for six of them put together!

"Blame is a Primitive Response"

Came across an interesting blog, that of Ryan Allis, a Southeast Entrepreneur.

He writes of an article by Prof. Jeffrey Sachs ,the Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University.

Writing in Forbes, Prof. Sachs says:”If journalists spent as much time studying the lives of the poor as they do gazing at the rich, it would help us all keep our heads on straight. We would marvel at a world economy strange enough to sustain such gaps. We’d learn not to blame the rich for the poverty of the poor, but we’d also learn not to blame the poor themselves. Blame is a primitive response. Entrepreneurship is a much better one.”

The answer for development is not charity but for us to be catalysts for economic progress which brings social progress in its wake.

In the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Michele Popiel writes of the managerial and leadership skills required for all kinds of organisations.

The basic pillars of managerial and leadership skills are the same irrespective of the type of organisation, large or small, for- profit or not -for -profit.

Eating out, today?

Saw a nice cartoon in a magazine recently. It showed one couple telling another ” We are moving from a 1BHK ( 1 bedroom, hall, kitchen) apartment to a 2 BHNK ( 2 bedroom, hall, No kitchen)- we are eating out all the time“.

This reflects a trend for many to eat out more often than before. Higher levels of disposable incomes and a tough work regime make eating out more common and convenient. Working moms find it more convenient to get into the nearest eatery instead of cooking at home. Kids get accustomed to junk food, which scores high on taste but low on health.

But eating out all the time can cause health problems besides making you dependent on the neighbouring restaurant. Research in the US indicated that children who ate out four or more times a week were at greater risk for heart disease and stroke later in life.
