Foreign Students in India’s B-Schools

Foreign students are trickling in to India’s business schools says an article in Business Today.

The reasons for studying in India range from the more obvious ones like the cost effectiveness of the program to understanding the country first hand prior to taking up assignments for their parent organisations. Apart from countries like Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Malaysia, South Korea and China, India’s growth story is also attracting students from the US.

Interestingly, the acknowledged best Business Schools in India – the Indian Institutes of Management- have not been attracting foreign students in a big way.

“To admit foreign students, we select students with GMAT scores of over 750. With that kind of a score, a candidate can walk into Harvard, Wharton or any other top management school. So, the issue is not of attracting foreign talent but one of attracting quality foreign talent. For that to happen, we need to be a top and visible brand overseas,” says Bakul Dholakia, Director, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad– by far India’s best business school.

Fun Ideas To Stimulate Your Creativity

Delighted to come across “Creative Think” the blog of Dr. Roger von Oech. I think he is one of the best writers on creativity. He is a Ph.D from Stanford on the “History of Ideas”.

I fondly remember his older books like “Whack On The Side of the Head” and “Kick In The Seat Of The Pants”.

Although I read it years ago, I remember his description of how creativity lives in the brain and how if not utilised it sinks lower and lower down the body to eventually rest and get fat – you know where!

Best of Luck, Dhoni

A good thing for Indian cricket that Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been appointed captain for the One day squad. They have series coming up against two strong teams in the near future. First, 7 One Day Internationals against Australia followed by a series against Pakistan.

Dhoni averages 44.23 after 84 ODIs with 3 centuries and 14 fifties. His strike rate is 96.26. Let us hope captaincy does not adversely affect his biggest strength which is his aggressive batting. He is doing pretty well so far as the captain for India’s Twenty20 team.

I was amused to see Chairman of Selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar’s statement that having 3 former captains in the team- Sachin Tendukkar, Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid- would actually help Dhoni !

To make it worse, he quoted the example of Md. Azahruddin who had 4 former captains (including Vengsarkar) in his team when he first became captain- as if having 1 was not bad enough.

Let’s hope Dhoni stays his own man and brings in more aggression to the captaincy.
