Smaller cities in India to prosper

The boom in India’s growing economy makes the metros or the Tier I cities virtually saturated.
They are becoming increasingly expensive- in all aspects of life and business. As they are becoming congested, many organisations are actively seeking to grow in Tier II and Tier III cities.

Recent trends show that due to lack of infrastructure and exorbitant property prices in the existing metros, the IT, ITES and the BPO companies are vying for smaller cities where they are promised better infrastructure, state-of-the-art office spaces and also skilled manpower. A careful study of these Tier III cities reveals the close proximity of these cities, to the most happening cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore to name a few. Thereby, it will be no mistake if they are called the extension cities of the booming metros.

Now it is the turn of the Tier III cities or the smaller cities like Jaipur, Ghaziabad, Kochi, etc. to make it big into the realty business as the government and the corporate sector target them as ‘India’s Next Destination Cities’.

Data from Nasscom shows software exports from tier II and III cities in India have grown dramatically from a mere 5% a couple years ago to 15-18 % now. It’s expected to go up to 25-30 % by 2010. What’s more, these new hotspots are expected to employ 30% of the projected strength of 850,000 IT professionals and 1.4 million ITeS professionals by 2010.

Indra Nooyi, the Chennai, India born Chairman of Pepsi ranks No.5 in the Forbes List of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World.

In an interview with the Miami Herald she shares her thoughts on how to succeed at the very top. To get to the top, Nooyi explains, you must be very good at something, the go-to person with a high level of competency in a specific area. In her case, she excels at strategy.
Second, she says, you have to work hard and do well in the jobs you hold rather than worry about office politics and getting ahead. Third, you need mentors and coaches.

Indra has a bachelor’s degree from the Madras Christian College; MBA from the Indian Institute of Management; Kolkatta and a Master’s degree in Public and Private Management, from Yale University.

Towards Better Work Life Balance

In WebMD, Personal coach Laura Berman Fortgang, author of “Now What? 90 Days to a New Life Direction” says getting your priorities clear is the first and most essential step toward achieving a well-balanced life.

The important point here is to figure out what you want your priorities to be, not what you think they should be.

“I use an exercise for figuring out what matters most,” says Fortgang. She has her clients take a couple days off from work to contemplate the following series of questions:

1. If my life could focus on one thing and one thing only, what would that be?
2. If I could add a second thing, what would that be?
3. A third?
4. A fourth?
5. A fifth?

According to Ms. Fortgang a typical Top 5 list would probably include the following:-
Children, Spouse, Satisfying career, Community service, Religion/spirituality, Health,
Sports, Art, Hobbies, such as gardening, Adventure/travel .

What are your Top 5?

Decided to submit my blog to Blogadda today- a collection of blogs from India. In the registration process one of the questions asked : ” When did you start this blog?” Gosh, who knows.

A bit of research indicated that my first post was on Sep 15, 2006. That makes it our first anniversary.

I must confess it has given me- if not my readers- a fair amount of satisfaction . I look forward to many more years of active blogging.
