Onboarding

  • ” It has taken my boss 5 days to meet me. If this is the treatment I get when I am new what will happen after a few months?”
  • ” In the absence of any structured program, I just went ahead and did what I would have done in my last organisation. Now I am told all that I did was wrong!”
  • ” The person chosen to guide me turned out to be the most frustrated guy I have met. He was more concerned about telling me his hard luck stories than help me understand the job”

Comments like these are fairly typical when the crucial process of onboarding is not managed the way it should be.

David Lee wrote about the 4 Deadliest Onboarding Mistakes. It reinforces that the best of processes done without competence does more harm than good.

Wedding Insurance

Sorry, wedding insurance does not mean you can put in a claim if your wedded life is not as per your expectation!

It does however provide you with insurance cover in case things go wrong and the wedding has to be cancelled. There are cases where months of planning and large amounts of money have been wasted due to a wedding having to be postponed/cancelled due to a mishap.

For those not in the know, since it is a relatively new concept to most in India, wedding insurance cover includes a list of events, which can lead to the cancellation or postponement of wedding such as fire and allied perils, accident to bride or groom, accidents to blood relatives resulting in hospitalisation within seven days prior to the printed/declared wedding date, damage to property, money in safe, burglary and public liability.

Considering the large sums of money involved in a wedding in India, it makes sense to go in for wedding insurance. Most likely nothing will go wrong but why take a chance?

Umpiring- Need for Reform

India lost the NatWest series to England 4-3 yesterday. They were outplayed and the better team won.

Yet how important are umpiring decisions in the final outcome of a cricket match? Aleem Dar, the Pakistani umpire gave two dubious decisions in a row to break the back of the Indian batting. First it was the skipper, Rahul Dravid, followed by Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar has had wretched luck with umpiring all through this tour of England. Pietersen was declared out in the Lord’s Test but came back when the umpire changed his mind. He was on his way back to the pavilion when his team mates indicated the catch was not fairly taken.

Should batsmen wait till the giant screen shows the TV replay before walking back? Were Rahul and Sachin too gentlemanly to ” walk” before they had to? When TV replays are used by the third umpire for lbw decisions why not for close calls on catches too?
