My favourite sport: Cricket. My favourite player: Rahul Dravid. Not because he, like me, is from Bangalore but because he embodies the best in batsmanship and sportsmanship. Both characteristics, unfortunately, being in rather short supply in today’s game.

Rahul has an impressive Test average of 58.75 after as many as 104 Tests, scoring 23 Test hundreds. What stands out is his quality of batting particularly in tours away from India in which most of his team mates have struggled. In tours of Australia, England, West Indies and South Africa he has stood solid as a rock to steady the Indian innings. His nickname “The Wall” reflects his technical solidity and frame of mind.

Highly committed to his craft and profession, Rahul is to my mind a perfect role model, both on and off the field, for thousands of youngsters who are so keen on the game and on making it big as professional cricketers.

Let’s hope he recovers from his injury to lead India from the front in the Test series against South Africa starting December 15.
